While it may seem like a highly specialized field that has little relevance to our everyday lives, the truth is that astrophysics has many practical applications that affect us in ways we may not even realize. In this article, we will explore some real-life examples of how astrophysics applies to our day-to-day life.
Much of astronomy is concerned with understanding distant phenomena, seeing the invisible, and studying the most extreme events in the Universe. But how does this pursuit help our daily lives here on Earth?
Astronomy has a unique ability to unite humans. Simply by asking big questions about the Universe and our place in it, we see ourselves as we are: together, voyaging through a singular moment in time on one very special but relatively minuscule planet among the vastness of space.
The sense of wonder inspired by humanity’s quest for knowledge of our Universe has its own important applications. In education, we see the teaching of astronomy at the primary or secondary level leading students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). In international relations, we see astronomy as a scientific field that transcends borders and promotes collaboration between global teams in unified pursuit of knowledge. In our culture, we see the impact of keystone scientific discoveries creating a more informed and scientifically literate society.
One of the most ubiquitous applications of astrophysics is in the Global Positioning System (GPS) that we use in our smartphones and cars. The GPS system relies on a network of satellites orbiting the Earth that transmit precise signals to GPS receivers on the ground. The position of the receiver is then calculated by measuring the time it takes for the signals to reach it from several satellites. However, the accuracy of this system depends on the precise timing of these signals, which is affected by the gravitational pull of the Earth and other celestial bodies. Therefore, GPS relies on the principles of astrophysics to correct for these effects and provide us with accurate location data.
Astrophysics has played a critical role in the development of new energy sources. Nuclear fusion, for instance, is the process by which stars generate energy by fusing atomic nuclei together. Scientists have been trying to replicate this process on Earth for decades, and progress has been made in developing fusion reactors that could potentially provide a nearly limitless source of clean energy. Similarly, the study of dark matter and dark energy could lead to new ways of generating energy, as these mysterious substances could hold the key to understanding the fundamental nature of the universe.
And let’s not forget that astronomy offers us a glimpse into our shared future. Will our species be able to spread across the cosmos, to colonize other planets, and to preserve our heritage and legacy through the ages? If so, it will only be through the study of astronomy.
